Mental Health Matters.

Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT) –  Achieving optimal mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being. Axis Health System provides a comprehensive, person-centered approach. The Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) program is here to support individuals who face multiple challenges and who would benefit from increased ability to regulate emotions and move towards goals effectively.

What is DBT?

DBT is an evidence-based therapy combining cognitive and dialectic approaches within a mindfulness framework, to support individuals in skillfully responding to challenges. DBT aims to empower individuals to take control of their emotions, make decisions in a balanced way, and enhance their interpersonal relationships. This type of therapy supports participants in changing unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving by increasing mindfulness and awareness, developing healthy ways to cope with stress, and to better regulate emotions. DBT can help with a variety of issues, including managing anxiety, regulating intense emotional response tendencies, improving interpersonal relationship skills, decreasing depression and more.

DBT fuses cognitive-behavioral therapy with mindfulness and other evidence-based practices to create a one-of-a-kind therapy experience. With DBT, individuals can tap into their full potential and lead a fulfilling, emotionally balanced life.

How Does DBT Work?

DBT operates on the principle that mastering one’s emotions is the key to unlocking a better quality of life. To achieve this, it employs a multi-pronged approach through its four core modules – Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation. These modules are thoughtfully crafted to empower individuals with the tools and techniques necessary to take control of their emotions.

Mindfulness hones the power of self-awareness and encourages a non-judgmental acceptance of thoughts and feelings.
Interpersonal effectiveness provides the foundation for strong relationships by teaching effective communication strategies.
Distress tolerance is all about skills to use when things get stressful, providing individuals with strategies to increase wellbeing and find peace in even the most challenging of situations.
Emotion regulation provides a framework for understanding and responding to emotions in ways that enhance self-regard and foster fulfilling relationships.
The DBT program at Axis Health System is comprised of Skills and Coaching therapy groups, supplemented by individual therapy when needed.

What is DBT Used to Treat?

DBT was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder. However, over the past 40 years, studies have shown DBT to be effective in the treatment of many mental health diagnoses. DBT is especially helpful for problems that involve pervasive emotional dysregulation, and for individuals who have numerous life challenges, or more than one mental health diagnosis.

DBT has been proven successful in treating and managing the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders, including binge eating and bulimia
  • Substance use disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Suicidal behavior
  • Self-harm behaviors

Rather than focusing on a specific disorder, DBT focuses on healthy coping mechanisms for the individual’s mental health condition.
