Steven is a Behavioral Health Manager at Axis Health System. His commitment to his patients runs to the core of who he is. He leads various outpatient behavioral health teams, ranging from mental health and substance use and the intensive outpatient program.
Steven thrives when forging new teams, drawing satisfaction from working harmoniously towards a shared purpose. He is an active member of the jail transitions team and the Clinical Supervisor for Jail Transitions, IDDT, the opioid peer program, and Espero, which provides supportive housing and healthcare to those most in need.
His past experiences include working as a social worker for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. He is studying for a Doctor of Behavioral Health in the Management track at Arizona State University, adding to his distinguished educational background, which includes a Master of Social Work and a Bachelor of Social Work.
Pursuing a Master of Social Work is a significant step toward a rewarding career in behavioral health. This advanced degree broadens your skills and deepens your understanding of human behavior, social welfare policy, and therapeutic interventions. The Master of Social Work typically requires a commitment of two to three years, with part of that time dedicated to supervised fieldwork. This immersive experience is designed to provide a real-world perspective on social work, solidifying your theoretical knowledge with practical application. These programs often offer areas of specialization, enabling you to focus on your specific interests within the social work field.
Throughout your studies, you will forge a deeper understanding of social justice issues, develop strategies for effective advocacy, and gain a comprehensive understanding of research methods in social work. Like Steven, you can use this education to influence policy changes and educate the next generation of social workers.
Beyond his activities at Axis, Steven is the Board president of Current Capacity Builders, Inc. He hopes to grow into a Vice President role at Axis Health System and, eventually, a C-suite position. In the long term, Steven aspires to influence policy changes through an office position and educate the next generation of social workers as a university lecturer.
Born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, of Cherokee and Navajo descent, Steven now lives in Farmington, New Mexico. A self-professed animal lover, Steven is currently training a cat to serve as a therapy animal at Axis Health System.
Steven’s unique blend of technical know-how and compassionate approach to care gives him a distinct edge, making him a dependable part of the team and a guiding light in the patient health journey.
