Cortez, Colo. – Axis Health System “Axis”, a southwest Colorado healthcare provider, now has two fully operational retail pharmacies in Montezuma and Dolores Counties. In Cortez, the new drive-thru pharmacy is located at Cortez Integrated Healthcare on Empire. In Dolores County, it is located at the Dove Creek Integrated Healthcare clinic. The pharmacies have a wide selection of commonly prescribed medications. The pharmacies are open to the public and accept most forms of insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, and other discounts are available.
These pharmacies are a part of the first telepharmacy program in the state of Colorado, which Axis Pharmacist Josh Shumway has pioneered to better serve the community. Telepharmacy benefits rural communities by allowing the pharmacist to supervise, verify prescriptions, and counsel patients from either location. Both pharmacies have staff available in person during business hours.
Dr. Shumway and certified pharmacy technicians Brandi Higgins and Tiffany Parisi oversee the pharmacy. Dr. Shumway, who joined the Axis team in June 2022, was able to help design the pharmacy site to best meet the community’s needs. Since he arrived, Shumway has enjoyed serving the rural communities of Montezuma and Dolores counties.
Shumway hopes to keep growing the pharmacy’s services and building its reputation as a timely, reliable site. “We can provide the services that this community needs,” he said. “Community members have a reliable pharmacy that’s going to be open, and that their meds are going to be ready on time.”
Both pharmacies are now open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To fill or transfer a prescription, ask your healthcare provider to send it to “Axis Health Pharmacy – Cortez” or “Axis Health Pharmacy – Dove Creek.”
The Cortez pharmacy is a part of Axis’ recent 8,000-square-foot addition this year, in which it added the drive-through pharmacy as well as dental care to the Empire location and expanded behavioral health and primary care space. Axis’ dental health services were previously located in Cortez on Maple.
